ATAD Policies for Emergency Situations

Association for Teen-Age Diplomats

It is ATAD's role to assist students, Host Families and natural families throughout emergency situations. To that end, ATAD has established the following policies and procedures.

1. ATAD, its representatives and Host Families are not responsible for a student's medical bills. Costs over and above those covered by insurance are the responsibility of the natural family. To protect all participants, and to meet the requirements established by the United States Information Agency, the following policies apply:

a. All International Students must procure medical insurance which meets the requirements established by the United States Information Agency. This insurance will be purchased by ATAD after receipt of funds from the International Student.

b. ATAD will inform the natural families and students of the required insurance. This information will include coverage and cost.

c. Money for such insurance shall be received by ATAD in United States funds no later than two weeks prior to the International Student's arrival.

d. Americans Overseas participants must have medical insurance that covers them overseas in the amount of $50,000 per accident or illness, with a deductible not in excess of $500 per accident or illness. In the event that family insurance does not meet these requirements, ATAD will provide information on available insurance which will provide such coverage.

2. In the event of any emergency, be it medical, an emergency in the Host Family or the natural family, an emotional emergency, travel emergency or legal emergency, the first priority is the safety and well-being of all involved. Once this has been established, the Host Family will immediately contact the Program Chair or other ATAD representative from a list of emergency contacts provided by ATAD to all Host Families and exchange students.

a. The Program Chair or other ATAD representative will, with the family, determine an appropriate course of action.

b. The Program Chair or other ATAD representative will contact the Program Liaison in the student's Partner City and/or the natural family as necessary.

c. ATAD will arrange for appropriate action as necessary. This may include, but not be limited to, medical evacuation of the student, repatriation of remains, securing a temporary family for the student, counseling, reorganizing travel arrangements, or arranging legal consultation.
