English Competency Test PDF Print E-mail
Written by Keith Crossley
The U.S. Department of State and Council on International Educational Travel (CSIET) requires that we administer a test to evaluate the English competency of all international exchange students prior to their acceptance into an exchange student program.

ATAD has developed such a test. This includes 5 parts (listening, grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing) and requires 1 hour for the students to take.  Beginning with the 2007-2008 program, all students who will be coming to Rochester will be required to take this test prior to final acceptance into the program.

The test is comprised of
  1. English Competency Test 1A - blank Answer Sheet
  2. English Competency Audio File

To take the test:
  1. Play the English Competency Test Audio component (Windows Media Player, RealAudio, etc.  This takes a few minutes to download)
  2. Answer the questions on the Answer Sheet.
  3. When completed, please return the test Answer Sheet to the Program Chair in Rochester so it may be graded.

As an alternative to this ATAD test, you may use a local test as long as it is comparable to the enclosed test. For example, final examinations in English classes at school may be acceptable. However, in place of using the ATAD test, the Program Chair must receive the test, the student’s results, and the acceptance criteria (acceptable grades to prove sufficient competency in English to succeed in the United States).
